Chemistry Songs

Project Overview

These songs were written and performed by students in Dr. Otto Phanstiel's Organic Chemistry I and II Classes, starting in 1999, and still singing.

Song: "I can See Clearly Now"

Artist: Johnny Nash

I can see clearly now the pain is gone.
I understand reactions and syntheses.
Here is an Aldol con-den-saaaa-tion
With a ketone, an aldehyde and a pinch of base
It's gonna be a bright, bright organic day.

Now the base abstracts an alpha hydrogen
To then become a stable enolate
Then it attacks another carbonyl,
To create a tetrahedral intermediate

Oh hold it right there, we still have to protonate
And we have yet, yet to dehydrate.

I can see clearly now the pain is gone.
This reaction is almost complete
Hope I can get the grade I've been praying for.
Now that I know it decomposes spontaneously.
Now that I know the final product is an enone, yippee.
With a byproduct of H2O, you can't trick me.

Yeah, its gonna be a bright bright organic Day
Yeah, its gonna be a bright bright organic Day
Yeah, its gonna be a bright bright organic Day
Yeah, its gonna be a bright bright organic Day
