Chemistry Songs

Project Overview

These songs were written and performed by students in Dr. Otto Phanstiel's Organic Chemistry I and II Classes, starting in 1999, and still singing.

"Aromatic Aerobics"

Matthew Wood, Daniel Dumile

Song: "Aromatic Aerobics"

Artist: Daniel Dumile, Matthew Wood

Aromaticity, its what Dr. P teaches
So wake up and smell the sweet cherries and peaches
He preaches its stability like none other.
In hormones that separate sister and brother.
I said "how can this be?" "The three double bonds?"
Then I learned it's the delocalized electrons.
And though cyclohexatriene was my first inference
There's a 150 kJ slash mole diff'rence
It's benzene! Its special! Its useful and nifty.
In England it coated floors through the fifties.
Like in Kekule's dreams, it became my obsession.

This compound, that causes bone marrow depression.

(Obligatory rap crowd interaction)

"Now we're going to play a little common naming game
for all you biology majors out there. Now when I say
methyl I'm going to point to you and you say toluene got
it?
"Methyl!"
"Toluene!"
2x

Alright now lets try this with something else. I'm going to say the substituent and you name the aromatic molecule
"If it's an A-mine!"
Aniline!"
If it's a methyl ketone!"
"Acetophenone"
"A carboxyl group"
"Benzoic acid"
"If its an ethenyl"
"Styrene"
"Alright I think you're ready for round two."

Toluene, phenol, benzaldehyde
But what's this? Thiophine? I looked at it and sighed.
Four carbons? One sulfur? Confusion ensued.
So Huckel, thank you, for 4n+2
You made finding these compounds like tying my shoe.
Just count up the pi electrons that are there
And remember to add if you have a lone pair
Now 4n+2 must equal this sum.
All that's left is where to get this n value from.
Any integer like 0, 1, 2, or 3...
Oh and don't forget because this part is key.

Aromatic rings are monocyclic and planar
That's sp2 carbons in one ring containers.

What's stranger still is their unique relation.
With reagents like those in F.C. alkylation
Nitration, or dehydrohalogenation.
And all of the rest of the benzene creations.
But on chapter 16 I'm still a bit stale.
Unlike Sir Phanstiel, who drank from the grail.
