Chemistry Songs

Project Overview

These songs were written and performed by students in Dr. Otto Phanstiel's Organic Chemistry I and II Classes, starting in 1999, and still singing.

"Grignard Chemistry of Whatever"

Bryan Moskowitz, Steven Armitage, Shayna Smith

Song: "United States of Whatever"

Artist: Liam Lynch

First you take an alkyl halide and add magnesium
It squeezes in the middle of the carbon-halide bond
The carbons are all, like 'Eww' and I was like 'Whatever!'

Then the carbon forms a partial negative charge
And magnesium forms a partial positive charge
The magnesium halide goes 'Ehh' and I'm like 'Yeah, whatever!'

So later the carbanion attacks the carbon of a carbonyl
And the charge is transferred to the oxygen
And the oxygen goes 'Woo' and I'm like 'Yeah, whatever!'

Cause this is my Grignard Chemistry of Whatever!
And this is my Grignard Chemistry of Whatever!
And this is my Grignard Chemistry of Whatever!

Then H3O+ comes along
And the negative charge on the carbonyl abstracts a hydrogen
HsO+ is like 'Hey, punk!' and I'm like 'Yeah, whatever!'

And then the Hydrogen bonds with an oxygen
Which forms an alcohol
Then the alcohol says, 'Mmm, drink me!' and I'm like 'That's cool.'

Cause this is my Grignard Chemistry of Whatever!
And this is my Grignard Chemistry of Whatever!
And this is my Grignard Chemistry of Whatever!
