Song: "Rockin? That Alkane"
Artist: Kumail Merchant, Shabnam Akanda
Chorus:
I-U, P-A-C
Wanna name that compound? Come with me
Alkanes' That's nothing I'll show you it's easy
You rockin' nomenclature with Dr. P
Verse 1:
Let's start with the single bonds; you must look for the chain that's long
And by that, I mean look at the Carbons and consecutively which is the longest, you on it
Now the rules for the naming start to kick in, depending on the chain of carbons
You've got methane, ethane, propane and butane, Depending on the number of the longest carbon chain
One is methane, two is ethane, three is propane, you getting it now man
The names go on, 4, 5, 6, and 7, Butane, pentane, hexane and heptanes
Octane, nonane, decane that's ten man, and remember that the ending it gonna be -ane
A-N-E if you can't see, you now rockin' that alkane with the I-U-P-A-C
Verse 2:
Ok man, but what about the alkyl groups, sticking out from the chain I dunno what to do
Look at the carbons involved, and you can tell, same name just change the ending to Y-L
Let's say I got an alkyl sticking out for example, with three carbons so I call it a propyl
But you gotta number the longest carbon chain so the substituents add up to the least number man
Suppose you got a ten carbon chain, so you call it a decane
And you got a methyl three carbons from one end; you gotta number the chain from that end
Cuz if you number the chain from the other side, the carbon with the methyl is 7 and that won't slide
And it's three if you number the other way, now you can name any alkane any day
Verse 3:
But how is it written' What order are they in? The alkane chain goes at the very end
And the substituents are numbered alphabetically, Think you got it? Now let's see
I got a carbon chain that's got three, substituents hanging off the eight carbon alkane
One is a one carbon, the other is a two, the third is a one, let's see what you do
8 means octane, you got two methyls, number it from the right, don't forget the ethyl
When it's two you put a di in front, alaphabetically e before m ignore the prefix
Put it together, do you go it? Number in front of the carbon that has it
You can name any alkane, the rules are the same, 6-ethyl-2,3-dimethyloctane
