Project Overview

These songs were written and performed by students in Dr. Otto Phanstiel's Organic Chemistry I and II Classes, starting in 1999, and still singing.

Let's start with an Alkyne
and let's add
sodamide;
you will get a negative i-on a-ce-ty-Iyde.
You can see that carbon has
a lone pair
there to spare
sitting next to plus-charge-sodium ion, don't forget.

Methyl chloride passes by
all exposed, big mistake.
Via S N 2 attack
chloride's expelled.
Let's add more Sodium amide
To get a-cetyl-ide;
a new victim comes along:
An aldehyde.
Aldehyde is non-chalant
and then wham! An attack!
Carbonyl is dead,
you can see the bond as it cracks.

The Alkyne grows in size
Will assault
someone else
H 3 O plus has been added and will be the next.
As the acid walks around
with one plus to donate
the big molecule is plotting:
"which one shall I take?"
Alkoxide is by itself,
3 lone pairs, all alone.
Takes away a proton
and we have an alcohol.

This guy has 5 carbons and
two of them triple bond,
o H in C 2; that's 3
pen - tyn - 2 - ol
Potassium permanganate
Would break that triple bond;
Too bad we ran out ofK M NO 4.
And if we had Platinum
And Deuterium as well
They would saturate it all
the way into Alkane.

And so the big war begins:
H 2 and catalyst
kick the bully's butt
and tum it into an Alkene.
Hydrogen is added with
the conformation cis.
It's important that you realize
what that prefix means.
