Project Overview

These songs were written and performed by students in Dr. Otto Phanstiel's Organic Chemistry I and II Classes, starting in 1999, and still singing.

Song: "I Can"

Artist: NAS

I know I can
Name what I wanna name
If I work hard at it
I can name the longest chain
I know I can (I know I can)
Name what I wanna name (name what I wanna name)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I can name the longest chain (I can name the longest chain)

Hey organic students listen up!
You can name any carbon chain using IUPAC
Saturated, substituents, or with a ketone,
Practice makes perfect once you get in the zone
Step 1: you need to count out the longest chain
Once youve done that, give it a prefix name
meth, eth, prop, but, or up as high as it goes
Step 2: Name and number substituent groups
And remember fluoro, its f-l-u-
Now put them in order so its the lowest sum total
Step 3: keep in mind the substituent repetition
Di, tri, tetra add to the beginning
now were at the finale, put it together
Alphabetize substituents according to the first letter,
Only pay attention to its actual name
Look how easy it is to label an alkane

I know I can
Name what I wanna name
If I work hard at it
I can name the longest chain
I know I can (I know I can)
Name what I wanna name (name what I wanna name)
If I work hard at it (If I work hard at it)
I can name the longest chain (I can name the longest chain
